Hitless Switching & Low Latency for Teleprotection
Designed with the latest advances in TDM-over–IP technology, the JumboSwitch supports extremely low latency (less than 3 msec) for demanding teleprotection-over-IP applications. A variety of criteria need to be considered for successful deployment of teleprotection-over-IP including:
Network DelaySince most power utilities use 60HZ power cycles (16msec periods), teleprotection applications require near "real-time" response. The total delay (including ingress/egress, network, and fiber delay) needs to be within one-half cycle (8ms) window.
In addition, during network recovery (e.g. the result of a fiber break) the extra nodes between the source and destination should not impact the total network delay. The JumboSwitch provides low ingress/egress processing delay as well as extreme low pass-through delay (12 usec) to minimize delay impacts due to rerouting conditions.
Hitless Recovery Since teleprotection applications are extremely mission critical, normal SONET/SDH (50ms) or Ethernet networks’ Rapid Spanning Tree RSTP (< 1sec) recovery times may be inadequate. For example, if a teleprotection circuit is activated during a network recovery, some packets from source to destination intended to trigger the teleprotection could be dropped or lost.
By duplicating the teleprotection frames in both fiber directions from source to destination, the JumboSwitch offers a "zero down-time" hitless recovery option that will fulfill even the most challenging teleprotection reliability requirements
